Occupy Vancouver — moss graffiti

This must be one of the coolest pieces of graffiti I have ever seen. A young graffiti artist, Joe, who sat next to me for a while as I drew the sketch below, told me that the artist who did this created a stencil of the typography in advance. He then used it to stencil a glue paste made from water, flour and sugar onto the wall of the Vancouver Art Gallery building, where the Occupy Vancouver protest and tent city has been mounted since October 15. He then pushed moss onto the stenciled glue paste. The result is simple and elegant, the contrast of the texture of the moss on the stone gives it depth, the fact that both are natural materials makes it feel human and handmade.

I think the contrast in materials also says something about nature vs. man-made structures, environmental needs vs. economic needs, organic growth vs. corporate growth.

If you are the artist and happen to see this photo, feel free to identify yourself!
