FOW Tour - 110 Park View Lane

by jcsullivan24

Friends of Wheeling toured 110 Park View Lane on April 24, 2023.

This beautiful home was built by Frederick S. Williams and his wife Harriet around 1900. Williams (1851-1936) was born in Orange, New Jersey. As a young man, he became associated with the Vulcan Iron Works and came to Wheeling in 1885 as chief chemist for Riverside Iron Works. He remained as chemist when that company was consolidated with the National Tube Company and retired when that company was dismantled in 1929. He was very involved with the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder from 1887 until the time of his death nearly 50 years later, moderator of the Wheeling Presbytery, Clerk of the Session, and founder of the Park View Sunday School. He and his wife Harriet (nee Stark, 1859-1903) raised two children – daughter Ethel (Mrs. John Shaw of Port Jervis, NY) and son Frederick S. Williams, a Presbyterian minister in New Athens, OH.

Following the death of Frederick Williams, his children sold the property in 1937 to William P. Dieckmann and his wife Wilhelmina, "Hon". Dieckmann (1902-1987) was one of three sons of John Dieckmann, who had founded the nearby Dieckmann Florist Company. The senior Dieckmann (born in 1870) was a German immigrant who arrived in the United States in 1895. He came to Wheeling in 1901, and in 1909, he purchased 25 acres of pasture land and founded his own successful florist business there. By 1923, he had 100,000 square feet of greenhouses and supplied “the finest of cut flowers and decorative plants for both lawns and homes.”

William Dieckmann worked with his brothers in the John Dieckmann & Sons Florist business. William and his wife nee Wilhelmina Folmar (1904-1966) raised three daughters, Joan, Jeanne, and Wilma.

In 1976, Richard D. and Jane Lynn Murdoch purchased the property while Murdoch served as Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Two years later, the Murdochs sold the property to Daniel and Carol Liberatore. Liberatore was listed in city directories of the time as an engineer for Wheeling Antenna Company.

In 1981, James J. and Barbara Reisinger purchased the property. James was the owner of Jay’s Pharmacy on Bethlehem Boulevard, and Barbara was a dental hygienist.

The current owner, Jason Haswell, purchased the property in mid 2003. Haswell is a broker with the Monteverde Group. The house is currently for sale.
