sometimes it helps to have small goals. apparently getting Rails to run under fastCGI mode is not a small enough goal. here it is running under WEBrick. Come to think of it, this is probably better for my health anyway, because to get fcgi working under apache (which it really, really, doesn't want to do...) I'll have to tear apart my whole custom httpd.conf. It's going to be fun putting what I've done back together as it is. Ah, the wonders of trying to run PHP and Rails on the same machine.
