CATERPILLAR DOZER AINSWORTH 1978

Ainsworths Caterpillars were employed by Wimpennys in 1978 to level the site at Spa fields, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield for the creation of the industrial estate that is there now. I could see these Cats working from our yard and I used to go down ther and watch them, I was just learning the nuts and bolts of photography with a borrowed Agfa super silette camera with all manual settings, I shot a roll of film from a distance, which I still have, I must have then taken the plunge and spent over £200 on Canon AE1, because these photos were taken with it. I still have the AE1 (a few actually but bought for a lot less). The scrapers used to roll over and be pushed back upright by the dozer. Ainsworths were from Birstall at the side of the A62, a yard full of these rare old girls, I used to gawp at them whenever we drove past. Most of the drivers seemed to be Irish lads. I did once get to drive a D6 and we used to run a Cat 955 Traxcavator loading shovel, The Case 1150's that we ran didn't have the cache of Cat but the choice of steering options made them a versatile machine to drive.
