Nordic Northwest
Over in the Nordic republic of Ballard, you can find there one of the most distinctive personalities of any Seattle neighborhood - and that personality is firmly down to its Nordic fishing roots. Over there, they tend to call cars "Fjords" and you can’t go a couple of blocks without seeing a Nordic name: Swedish Club, Sons of Norway, Swedish Hospital, Danish flags, Viking Sport Seattle Cycling Team, etc.
The community also celebrates Norwegian Constitution Day, and it is the home of the only Nordic Heritage Museum in all of the USA. And then there's the tree-and bench-lined Bergen Place Park, located in a triangle of land in the heart of the community, that honors the 1967 twinning relationship between the people of Seattle and the people of Bergen, Norway.
Shilshole Bay Marina even has a giant bronze statue of Norse explorer Leif Erikson, who is believed to have landed in America about 500 years before Columbus.
It was no wonder then that, recently, at the always fantastic and not-to-be-missed Ballard Seafood Festival (www.seafoodfest.org), this Nordic heritage really comes to the fore, with not only the food ("Anyone for more pickled herring?") on offer, but also a signpost telling you the distance and direction to where families in the community originated from.
