Acacia auriculiformis seedpods

Acacia auriculiformis, called simply "auri" on Guam, is an Australian acacia widely planted around the world. Because of the tree's tolerance to acid soils, it is commonly used to restore degraded lands. On Guam plantations of A. auriculiformis are also being established to shade out grasses and cut down on grass fires. On better soils the tree fixes nitrogen. The species can be invasive, as the seeds are spread by birds. On Guam that has not been a problem since the bird population was decimated by the brown tree snake.
