Straight grain and spiral grain ‘ōhi‘a posts

‘Ōhi‘a (Metrosideros polymorpha) is famous for having spiral grain. Anyone who has split ‘ōhi‘a firewood can attest to that. Lumber cut from a log such as is shown in the top of the photo will tend to warp and check. But the grain can be extremely variable, as seen in this photos of two posts. Hawaii Island, Hawaii.
