Pterocarpus indicus seedpods

Narra (Philippines), New Guinea rosewood, or Burmese rosewood. Botanical synonyms include P. blancoi, P. echinatus, and P. vidalianus. Native to Philippines, mainland Southeast Asia, across through Melanesia to Fiji and Vanuatu and western Micronesia, including Palau. National tree of the Philippines. Dark red, hard wood provides a valuable lumber. Grows from large cuttings and may be used as a living fence or coffee shade plant. Fixes nitrogen. The round, winged seed pods (Ptero = wing, carpus = body) may be smooth or spiny, as shown here. Each contains 2 to 4 seeds.
