Short-Eared Owl

I took a short drive south to the farmlands of Ohio to observe the Short-eared Owls. This year has been exceptional for owl sightings, with numerous spots across the state offering opportunities to observe and capture photographs of these fascinating birds. Ohio serves as one of their winter destinations before they migrate back to their breeding grounds in Northern Canada and parts of Alaska. The wide-open corn fields, now barren except for the low stalks left after the harvest, provide an ideal spot for them to roost and hunt for prey. This is a photo of the first Owl I spotted on arriving at the fields, perched on the branch of a low tree next to the road.
