THOUSAND ISLANDS
The Thousand Islands constitute a North American archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada–US border in the Saint Lawrence River as it emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They stretch for about 80 km downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario and the U.S. islands in the state of New York.
The islands range in size from over 100 km2 to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks. To count as one of the Thousand Islands, emergent land within the river channel must have at least one square foot (0.093 m2) of land above water level year-round, and support at least two living trees.
Las Mil Islas constituyen un archipiélago norteamericano de 1.864 islas que se extienden a ambos lados de la frontera entre Canadá y Estados Unidos en el río San Lorenzo, cuando emerge del extremo noreste del lago Ontario. Se extienden unos 80 km río abajo desde Kingston, Ontario. Las islas canadienses están en la provincia de Ontario y las islas estadounidenses en el estado de Nueva York.
El tamaño de las islas varía desde más de 100 km2 hasta islas más pequeñas ocupadas por una sola residencia o afloramientos de rocas deshabitados. Para ser consideradas como una de las Mil Islas, el terreno emergente dentro del canal del río debe tener al menos un pie cuadrado (0,093 m2) de tierra por encima del nivel del agua durante todo el año y sustentar al menos dos árboles vivos.
