Lanier's Underbelly
As Lake Lanier continues to drop old boating hazards are revealed and new hazards lurk just below the surface. The lake is different every weekend. What was once rocks has become beach only to become steep mud embankment. The fish aren't were they used to be and neither are the boats. Most ramps are closed and sail boats with deep running keels can't overnight in many coves anymore. The water develops milky streams as the waves work freshly revealed red Georgia clay. The lake has dropped 3 feet since spring. It's down almost 17 feet. What was once your camp site is now 15 feet over your head as you approach by boat. New islands are everywhere and passages between islands are gone or worse... they're treacherous.
