A cup of inspiration...

I enjoyed part of my day off today at a soccer tournament cheering for my daughter's team. I'm so proud of her - she's a truly excellent player. She has strong skills, is a natural athlete (which I really never was), is so fun to watch, and does whatever she can to help motivate her teammates. Just before we left for the trip home, my son brought me a little paper cup of hot coffee from one of the tournament vendors. On the cup were printed these words:

"Be the example; spread hope."

How timely were those words. Cherilyn, better known as "CK" on the field, was kicked hard twice in the back of the ankle during play. The first kick left her limping slightly, but playing through. The second kick to the same ankle shortly thereafter took her down. She sat out for a short bit, and with the score tied, the chemistry and motivation of the team was diminishing along with the pleasant, cool air of the morning. They were up against a tough team that had remained physically aggressive and undefeated. Not much time was left on the clock, and CK was sent back out onto the field. Her instinct was to rally, be the one to yell encouragements to the others, and play hard. With just moments left in the game, she assisted with a cross for the final goal. How could a mom not be proud! After that game, several of the other parents approached us and made mention of the effort and contagious motivation that she brought back onto that field with her. In the purest of ways she emulated those very words on that little coffee cup. What a great kid, eh?
