Yia Yia's Abandoned House Estate Sale, Plainville, CT
I work for an estate sale company and I had the amazing opportunity to dig through this incredible time capsule of a house to hold an online auction of its contents. Not only was I hired to do a sale in this "abandoned house" but there was a SECOND house in practically the same condition as this one that the family owned as well, that I had the privilege to hold a sale in also. The sale is now over and the house is currently for sale. I tried to purchase both houses but to no avail... just not my time yet to be "allowed" to get a mortgage which sucks. Anyway, I wish I could restore, (not renovate, there is a difference) this house properly. The other house has been gutted. Its very sad. I will be uploading more photos of Yia Yia's house as well as the other house which I will call Parry's House. Stay tuned.
A little history on Yia Yia's house. Zillow said it was built in 1916, but that is not correct. While cleaning out the basement I discovered "1910" written in the foundation. I believe this house may be a catalog house. There are several houses in the area with the same plan. Yia Yia, her husband and their children moved into the house in the late 1940s. The couple owned a business in downtown Plainville called "The Palace of Sweets". They closed it in the 1970s, moved its contents into the houses including a bunch of new old stock items, 1950s appliances, and an Edwardian Bar Back/soda fountain, all of which was included in the sales. We found many old photos in the house where we could spot items pictured all throughout the house! Yia Yia and her husband both died in 1989. Time basically stood still in the house since their deaths. There was so much from the late 80s just laying out, just where they left it. Two of their children remained living in the house until their deaths in the 2000's. Their last son passed away in 2021. Unfortunately it appeared he was living in these houses in a sort of hoarder condition with a lot of dirt, which made me very sad.
After working in these houses and digging through the layers of decades worth of stuff, I felt a connection to this family. Like I now know them all personally. We definitely felt an energy in the house. The family was all still there, I believe. The week before the auction pick up we brought a bouquet of flowers, placed them in a vase and put it on the mantle for the family in spirit. After the contents were gone, The energy was different inside. I placed the bouquet inside one of the walls in a little crawl space I found in a closet. We now have many of the family's belongings displayed in our home. I think they have followed us to our home, in a very good way.
