A little birdie told me that some super nice photographers were going to be on Treasure Island Shooting the Bay Bridge and San Francisco during the “blue hour” (which never materialized). I thanked the bird for the information, slid a couple dollars up under its wing for the tip, and packed my gear and hopped in my truck.

For reasons of national security :0), these very friendly photographers will remain nameless, but you know who you are!!! As is typically the case, once we arrived on location, I tried to get a little lower, go a little farther, and tried to get just a slightly different comp than I’d seen before (probably unsuccessful here as there are so many comps, but…

My feelings on the worth of the drive in were wavering as blue hour came and went with absolutely no color. Stupid summer! That all changed though as the city and bridge began to flicker, and the lights kicked on. The fog hung low, allowing the light to really glow and illuminate the evening air. I think I can speak to everyone when I say we were stocked and in awe of what we were seeing. Wait, that’s a military strike tactic right? Okay, I take that back, it was beautiful instead.

The wind was kickin’ quite a bit, making it a little cold to shoot ( I never take enough clothes when coming in from the valley and 95 degree weather). The wind was also carrying quite a bit of moisture onto my filters, which meant tons of cleanup on the image.

Last thing, I had to jam my lens cap under the bottom of my singh-ray GND filter to adjust lens reflections/refractions /flare around the bridge lights. Essentially moving the flare back into the light source itself so you couldn’t see it. Any suggestions for a better way to handle this??? I’d love to know.

Cheers and happy shooting everyone!
