Horus the Child

Rome, Musei Capitolini, September 2017

A beautiful statue of Harpocrates or Horus the Child from the time of Hadrian. The small double crown is the only reference to his Egyptian origins. The finger brought to his mouth was the traditional gesture for Egyptian child deities, but was in Hellenistic and Roman times interpreted as a sign of silence and secrecy. In his left hand he holds a small cornucopia.

MC 646. Roman period, reign of Hadrian (117 – 138 CE). From Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli. Marble. H. 158 cm.
