Giant Downtown designed by Barten Leijh
The Giant Downtown, don't be surprised, is a city bike, designed by Barten Leijh. It is rather vandalism proof, and very well equipped for urban transport needs.
The headlight is integrated in the main frame tube; the steering bar is a good lock at the same time. Look at the key sticking out of the steering bar.
Racks are optional, but in my opinion essential to the bike. There were also tailor made orange sacks for the bike; not shown here.
This bike just went out of production, and is still available at a few outlet internet shops. The price is low, but the remaining stock is only available without the beautiful racks and sacks. A pity, because with racks and sacks it would be a great collector's item.
The exhibition was organized by the Designhuis in Eindhoven. Eindhoven is because of its outstanding Design Academy one of the breeding grounds of Dutch design.
Many students and professional designers explored the possibilities of improved bicycles or cycling. This exhibition celebrates this with pride. I never realised before that so much bicycle design originated from the Netherlands.
