Lou at home 2-18-2007
This is what I saw, and where I sat facing almost every time I was at the Echo Park house. Lou always welcomed me to randomnly drop in as I lived far. I'd stop at his house to wait out the night traffic and shove some healthy food onto his table. Puma was always there to greet me. Lou told me his wild stories about his life and I told him stories about the history of Los Angeles.
The palms trees are so abundant because at one time the L.A. area was orange groves. The palm trees were transplanted from more tropical areas to slow down the tradewinds coming in from the pacific coast. Before that, the oranges would blow off the trees, leaving the farmers with less crop to sell.
My grandmother, an L.A. native, says that the Eagle Rock & Echo Park areas used to be the upscale neighborhoods of L.A. before Beverly Hills existed.
