This song has some personal history for me along with the fact that I really like the Pet Shop Boys version. There was a bar/dance club/drag bar in Portland called "Embers" and there were a handful of times me and my then boyfriend, Gary got up on the 'drag' stage and lip-synced to Go West in front of a bunch of people. Saturdays they gave people the opportunity to come up on stage between drag shows and dance or do comedy or lip sync to songs.
So there I was on stage lip-syncing (playing the part of Neil Tennant) while my boyfriend 'played' a borrowed large keyboard (playing the part of Chris Lowe). I was flanked by 3 guys to my left and right wearing short shorts that made up the color of the rainbow. They lip-synced the parts of the lyrics in parentheses in the song. Those performances were wonderful memories.
The original Village People version was about going West to San Fransico, the 'gay capital' of the USA.
The Pet Shop Boys version was more about Russia (then known as the Soviet Union and moving to a more western political thinking and away from communism. The Pet Shop Boys version adds a new coda and a bridge...
