Sunflowers

The sun sets over a beautiful field of Sunflowers on a calm summer evening in Bride. This was a surprisingly difficult shot to capture. The challenge is the scene requires deep depth of field to render foreground flowers and the sunset sufficiently sharp. This means shooting at a narrow aperture, which really strangles off light levels for the exposure. The second conflicting issue is movement in the flowers, even by the gentlest of breezes means a reasonably fast shutter speed is needed to avoid motion blur. The movement equally makes solutions like focus stacking tremendously difficult to seamlessly pull off.

Very careful focus point placement, an understanding of the plane of focus and utilising higher ISO is the only way to get a shot like this. Really pleased with the end results here, no motion blur at all and sharp right across the scene – it’s a stunning spot and I’d highly encourage a visit for anyone on the Isle of Man 🌻
