Sea Arch and Window

This is one more interesting geological feature along the basalt cliffs at Arnarstapi, Iceland. Arnarstapi is on the southern coast of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in the NW part of the country. The feature is produced by wave erosion exploiting a weakness in the basalt rock, such as some closely spaced joints or a fracture zone, at which point the erosion proceeds faster than at the rest of the outcrop. Eventually the arch will widen and collapse. The remaining supports will then be sea stacks. A sea stack is in the distance.
