In the Irish soil classification system these soils are Gleyic Brown Earths. These soils display gleyic features due to the presence of a shallow fluctuating groundwater table. This feature occurs in soils which are affected by seasonal or continuous waterlogging. The presence of iron and manganese concretions and/or nodules of grey colouring from continuous presence of a watertable, can be indicative of wetness.
