The Three Fates Fountain

Designed by sculptor Josef Wackerle, in 1956 the Three Fates Fountain was given as a gift of gratitude to the Irish people from West Germany for Ireland’s help to the German people, particularly West German children, after World War II.

The bronze sculpture is of the Three Norns of Norse mythology: Urd (past), Verdandi (present) and Skuld (future). In Norse mythology, the Norns control the destinies of Gods and men.

There are three plaques around the fountain, one in English, one in Gaelic, and one in German, each of which says “This fountain, designed by the sculptor Josef Wackerle, is the gift of the people of the German Federal Republic to mark their gratitude for Ireland’s help after the war of 1939-45. The bronze group portrays the three legendary fates spinning and measuring the thread of man’s destiny.”
