Rose Hill Cemetery

The main burial site before the inception of Oakwood was Rose Hill Cemetery, which covered 11.8 acres in the north side of the city. People became dissatisfied with Rose Hill due to inaccessibility, the lack of natural beauty and the fact that it was not easily improved. Also within a few years, the growing city would encroach into the surrounding area. Between 1841 and 1935, 10,561 burials were made and only a few were moved to other cemeteries when it closed. In the 1950's, city workers buried most of the head stones in the interest of safety. The city planners wanted to make the land into a park but that could not happen until all of the bodies were removed which would involve obtaining permission from all families of those interred. Today, Rose Hill occupies about a city block and is a barren hillside with some tombstones at the top.

I am going to have to go off on a tangent here so bare with me folks. Seeing the kids twirling around a monument is one thing. It's disrepectful to me, but tolerable compared to this. This is the crypt of Harvey Baldwin and his family. Harvey was the first mayor of Syracuse, NY. Apparently it does not appear that the city workers are taking care of this place as they should. Graffiti all over the place especially here, beer cans, and broken glass all over the steps. What kind of schmuck goes to a cemetery and drinks beer, kleaves their crap all over the place, and then breaks the beer bottles? The 2nd mystery is why did they paint this crypt. That white paint you see is not original. On the other sid ethe paint is peeling and you can see the original stone. But to paint over this, Wjy? You can't make out who is buried in there easily. I was so sick over this for days.
