Trabala sp. (Lasiocampidae)

Lappet Moth Caterpillar. I have moved this old image to the front of the Photostream because I want to make a new comment.

This is a variation of the false eyes that many tropical caterpillars have to mimic snakes. It has occurred to me recently that when younger I never saw false snake-like eyes on a caterpillar because I grew up in New Zealand with an incomplete fauna. There have been no snakes to mimic in New Zealand for 140 million years.
