Mark Twain , USA Philosophizing Writer Quotes

Born November 30, 1835; Died April 21, 1910

When red-haired people are above a certain social grade their hair is auburn.

When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained.

When your friends begin to flatter you on how young you look, it's a sure sign you're getting old.

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Why is it that we rejoice at a birth and grieve at a funeral? It is because we are not the person involved.

For brevity, I altered this excerpt from pages 201-202 of Robin H. Neillands’ Grant: The Man Who Won the Civil War (2004 Cold Spring Press) :

General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-91) was a paradox. Although the most ruthless of generals–“War is Hell”, he once declared, “and I intend to fight it that way”–no one was more willing to help the South once the surrender came. General Ulysses Simpson “U. S.” Grant (1822-85) depended on Sherman and trusted him absolutely, but here again there is a paradox, for Sherman was unstable. Sherman had a complete nervous breakdown early in the war and there was a time when the general opinion in the United States Army thought him mad. But Sherman recovered and returned to the war and was there with Grant until the end. Grant therefore deserves credit for choosing his subordinate generals and standing by them in adversity; they in turn repaid his trust with good service and great loyalty.
