Sovereign State Days Parade

Another from my "All About The Bridge" series here in Winneconne. You can see this long parade coming over the crown of the bridge in the background. Traffic through the city is shut down for a couple of hours. The bridge does not raise up to let boats through and everything transportation wise comes to a stop.

This parade originated a number of years ago when the Village of Winneconne was left off the Wisconsin state map. The village decided to have some fun with it. They proposed to secede from the state of Wisconsin and start their our state of Winneconne. Of course this didn't happen, but every year in the middle of July the Sovereign State Days festival is held. Music, dances, food, flea markets, a parade, fireworks, and softball tournaments are just some of the events that bring in the people.

After I took this shot I walked back to the end of the parade and joined the political party of my choice and marched with them on the route promoting our state senate candidate. That flag that those veterans are carrying guarantees that right.
