I'm trying to grok what extension tubes do.

 

This is 48mm worth on a 55mm lens. There is a thin strip of pixels in focus near the top of the frame. Perhaps they increase the rate at which focus changes as distance from the focused area increases.

 

I don't know how to express that less clumsily.

 

The phone is a Nexus 5.
