U5 Extension Opening, 4th December 2020 - Rotes Rathaus U5
Looking East.
The gap in the U-Bahn Line U5 between Alexanderplatz and Brandenburger Tor, along with two of the three stations (Museumsinsel opens March 2021) was opened for service on 4th December after a very small, corona style ceremony.
The U5, originally Line E was opened in December 1930 between Alexanderplatz and Friedrichsfelde. Two eastward extensions were opened in the 1970s & 1980s. A seperate Western section was opened in 2009 as U55. This section has now been connected to the original line by this new extension.
