This was the Flickr 'Explore' image that first caught my attention to Phil's work. When I saw this image, I wasn't sure it was a photograph. It was so perfect. I thought it might be an Adobe Illustrator vector illustration. Like many of Phil's 'Horizons' images, he often shoots directly into the light. Bringing out this much detail in a back-lighted situation requires some major planning and post-processing work in Photoshop--and Phil has done both very well.

The EXIF info on this photo indicates that Phil shot it at ISO 6400, using the Canon 7D (many of these images were taken with the Canon 7D). Despite the high ISO setting, the noise in this image has been suppressed quite nicely.
So why such a high ISO setting? Phil didn't want to get out his tripod ;o) His chosen F5.6 aperture (he shoot everything "manual") required a reasonably fast shutter speed in order to hand hold the camera, so he increased the ISO (to 6400) until it gave him a shutter speed of 1/160 of a second.
Nothing here yet.
