Extraordinary Light Cholla Cactus Joshua Tree National Park
In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary. ~Aaron Rose
I must confess that I am a James Neeley groupie. I view each one of his Flickr uploads and read every bit of information in his descriptions. His work is so interesting that I even upgraded to the Nikon D700—the same camera he uses. When I saw that he was an instructor at the Mountain High Workshop in Joshua Tree National Park, I signed up!
As an instructor, he pushed me beyond the typical tripod landscape experience. “Use a different lens”, he said. “Bump up your ISO” he prodded. “Forget the tripod....just walkabout”, he coached! And it was during those times, I began to see. Moving to places where the tripod couldn’t go and angles that a tripod couldn’t reach, the images in my head began to change. Macro images of cholla cactus and desert flowers. Textures and geometric patterns in rock formations. Mountain climbers scaling steep rock inclines. Even an old stove became an interesting subject. I was “moved”.
Spending a week with James Neeley, the artist, was a dream come true. Getting to know Pat Neeley, the person, was truly extraordinary.
