12-Pelling - Wet Dock walk, Tovell's Wharf, with TS Orwell left, cranes and students, 1980s, Ipswich
The TS Orwell - a training ship of the Ipswich Sea Cadets was built in 1914 and was the ex LV80 - 1914-1980.
Pam Pelling was a lecturer at Suffolk College in the 1980s. A lecturer in business studies and later Head of Child Care and Applied Science she came across the images which had been taken by students of hers. Amongst her find were some older images from the sixties of the town, but the majority were from the 1980s at the waterfront.
The photographs are mainly of the wet dock in Ipswich and an attempt to trace the route taken by the photographer has been made.
Starting at Ransome’s Wharf there is a move to Wherry Quay (with dip into Fore Street and a galleon tied up on the waterside) before moving around to Tovell’s Wharf. The Island and the Harbourmaster’s house and the Public Warehouse are shown after which the south west quay is explored. Finally the lock and swing bridge feature with a long look down the river Orwell towards the sea.
