On August 3rd, IOM and USAID representatives travelled to Piis, an island at the edge of the Chuuk Lagoon, to distribute food and conduct damage assessments as part of USAID and IOM’s Typhoon Maysak response effort. The group distributed 664 cases of corn, 239 50lbs. sacks of rice, and 42 cases of vegetable oil as supplemental food assistance provided by USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.
Officials in attendance included U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Hugues Ogier, USAID Team Leader of Pacific Island Projects Dr. Muhammad Khan, Peace Corps Response Volunteer and Advisor to Chuuk State’s Disaster Coordination Office Lynda Neal, IOM Reconstruction Advisor Christian Oakes, IOM Attorney Miwa Takahashi, IOM Housing Implementation Consultant Christopher White, and IOM Reconstruction Operations Consultant Joseph Ferris III.
