HMS Tern opened in 1941 primarily as a training airfield for aircrews stationed on naval vessels afloat in nearby Scapa Flow. It was also known as RNAS (Royal Naval Air Station) Twatt. The bulk of the technical site is now preserved and under the custodianship of the Birsay Heritage Trust, and can be freely explored. Tours of the tower can be arranged through the Trust.
