IJC Commissioners considered information presented by the US Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the National Energy Board (NEB) of Canada about their energy pipeline safety programs and regulations to protect Great Lakes water. Commissioners inquired about what's working, and what's not, to prevent pipeline spills. The agencies explained how their approach manages spill risks to an ALARP level: As Low As Reasonably Possible. IJC Commissioners pressed for binational cooperation and encouraged better public access to pipeline inspection information.
