WFH

The extreme cold took its toll on my increasingly run-down office building today, crashing the air handlers and making the labs uninhabitable. Since I work in a research building, that meant the building had to be shut down. (Several other buildings on the site had the same problem.) So we were evacuated from our offices at about 10:45 in the morning, and were sent to the cafeteria to wait for further word. Over two hours later we were told to get our computers and find "alternate work arrangements" for the rest of the day. Sigh. I hate working from home. I don't like having work happen while I'm in my "sitting on the couch" mode (and it's not like I'm not going to sit on the couch in pajamas if I'm home, right?), and I don't like not having a buffer between the end of my workday and being at home, and for some reason filling downtime with random internet stuff seems fine when I'm at the office but makes me feel guilty when I'm home. So I had a not-so-thrilled afternoon of working on the couch, after a wasting-my-time morning of waiting in the cafeteria to be told what to do next. At least it's not like the last time we got an "everybody evacuate the building right now!" announcement -- that time there was asbestos in the building and they didn't let us back in for a month. At worst I think I'm looking at one more day of this.
