Fathers and sons, verging

by RISE Interactive Institute AB

Fathers and sons, verging are ‘moving’ family portraits. Family as common ground; two pairs of feet steadily rooted and horizontally equal at the base of things, as their heads are not in the same axis in relation to what is up and what is down (reality). Fathers and sons, verging displays looped films of 5 pairs of fathers and sons. They stand in familiar settings and silently perceive their surroundings as well as each other and the camera. There is nothing strange in the fact that one of them is verging. The dramatic continuation of the work is based on the assumption that people are prone to mirroring other people’s behaviour. In this case it means that looking ‘more closely’ at someone who is verging, may result in ... turning your head sideways. Consequently, when a viewer tilts her/his head sideways (to the left), a sudden shift in perspective occurs: the camera tilts sideways and the leaning father or son is straightened up. Father and son are now aware of the fact that something has changed. Something is wrong. Both stand straight. They choose to leave the image, each in their own direction. We are left with the next pair of father and son.
