Voodoo Magic

Having seen and shot the swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin during the ‘ghost tree’ phase of late fall colors, David was kind enough to let me tag along for another bayou excursion. This time, the target was the early fall colors when the bald cypress have a mix of colors. Leading up to our trip, David and I were talking everyday about the potentially great weather conditions we would experience. To our luck, we had three consecutive clear and cold mornings that created morning mist on the surface of the bayou waters. The temperatures on the first morning dipped down into the 20’s and there was so much mist I frequently lost sight of David despite him being only 10ft in front of me.

One of my goals this trip was to find scenes where I was immersed within a cypress grove that would highlight depth. After getting into my groove for a bit I found this composition on the third morning with a variety of tree sizes and a plethora of colorful leaves ranging from greens to yellows to oranges, and finally reds.

Thanks again to David for making this a great trip and bringing the excellent weather. To make the trip even better, we had amazing Cajun food every night.
