Epilogue
I had originally planned to hike and see the Painted Dunes in the summer but constant wildfires in California forced me to reschedule. By autumn, the skies were finally clear and as a bonus the temperature was much cooler as well for the hike. The Painted Dunes are one of the most unique landscapes, a cross between badlands and a volcanic aftermath. On the geological scale these dunes are extremely young, formed across several volcanic eruptions in the 1650’s.
While sporting similar color bands of badlands, the true difference in these Painted Dunes is the existence of trees. The presence of trees gives the dunes a ‘miniature’ appearance from far away and gives a sense of scale to the vastness of these dunes. After sunset, the real magic happened when the soft light saturated the colors giving the dunes a glowing appearance.
