A Moment of Zen

For us photographers springtime shooting is about getting the holy trinity of fresh wildflowers, burning sky, and minimal winds is extremely desirable. Most times, getting two of the three is considered a success but on this April evening I was blessed with nearly ideal conditions.

Per Escaype, a stream of high clouds was forecasted to blanket the Bay Area at sunset creating what could be an exceptional sunset. As such I joined up with Jeff and Tung and headed down towards the Santa Cruz coastline. Having arrived early we scouted around a few beaches looking at various conditions before settling on Davenport Beach. There we ran into other photographers including Nick. Surely the gathering of photographers could only mean a brilliant show is in the plans.

After we scouted around the cliff sides and down along the beach, Jeff and Tung decided on shooting the iconic Davenport crack whereas I remained on higher ground for a different perspective. There, I spotted a beautiful bundle of freshly blooming Erigeron, also known as Seaside Daisies, which are native to California’s coastline.

Just a few weeks past spring equinox the direction of the sunset was nearly perfect for my composition; I was able to frame both the sea stack and the beach in the mid-ground with the sunset down the center of the sky. With virtually no wind I was also able to shoot at low ISO maximizing the final image quality. The light show began shortly before sunset and the clouds eventually erupted into deep oranges, reds, and pinks. This was easily one of the best sunset showings I have encountered in some time and it ended up burning for well over 45 minutes.
