Emergence

The sight of fresh snow in Yosemite Valley is one of the most magical scenes of nature. For years I have been chasing a breaking storm shot right around sunrise or sunset. As always the mountains are unpredictable and micro weather systems seem to have a mind of their own.

With a slew of storms pouring down from the Pacific Northwest, there was a high chance Yosemite Valley was going to receive several inches of snow. Aaron, Zach, and I decided to head out midnight for the valley in hopes of getting the storm breaking at sunrise. For most of the drive it was quick and straightforward but once we gained elevation the rain turned into snow. Soon we were reduced to driving at slow speeds through the slick and windy roads but the white beauty outside made it all the worthwhile.

We arrived in time for sunrise but the storm refused to break. Soon it became apparent the storm was picking up again as large pellets of snow bombarded us.

After spending some time grabbing breakfast we headed out for the valley again and this time the storm began breaking for real. We initially made a spot near El Capitan as we spotted sunlight bursting through the storm clouds and then we made our way over to Valley View. Upon arrival much of the peaks were still shrouded in clouds but a short wait later El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks began peaked out. Soft filtered light and fresh snow combined for a breathtaking scene.
