Ascension

Back in my HS days I was mesmerized by a beautiful wintry sunrise photo of mountains with a frozen lake. For a long time I never knew where it was taken or what mountain was in the photo. Needless to say that very shot was of Vermilion Lakes.

Fast forward more than 10 years later, I finally stood on the shores to photograph my own version of that photo. Initially Aaron and I headed for the Third Vermilion Lake. Upon arriving we saw the sky having a pre-burn. The colder temperatures and dusting of snow overnight changed the landscape of the shoreline from the previous morning. After firing off a few shots we knew we were in the wrong place and bolted back toward Second Vermilion Lake.

Luckily the Second Lake had exactly what we were looking for: icy shores covered in a fresh coating of snow and open pools of water for reflections. However the sky pre-burn faded as we setup our gear. Despair set in as we thought we had missed the light. Fortunately light comes in two stages and about 15 minutes later the real burn began. The sky exploded in blazing pinks and reds and was soon joined by light beams bursting skyward from behind Mt. Rundle.

It was a long and stunning sunrise and it felt very rewarding to finally have captured that image I had loved for so long.
