In recent weeks the Bay Area has been treated to several stellar sunsets as an unusually high number of systems have made their way across California. On this evening Rick (aka Nightshooter) finally came out of his nocturnal shell and joined for a sunset shoot along the coast. After checking the conditions at various beaches we decided on Hole-in-the-Wall beach.
One of my favorite beaches, Hole-in-the-Wall offers a plethora of compositions including channels, spine rocks, and of course a massive sea stack. As the sunset colors developed I positioned myself within a small channel hoping to capture sweeping waves curling around a foreground rock. However the weak surf provided little water action within this channel and I abandoned my spot and began looking around for a new composition. I instantly spotted another small channel facing the sea stack. As soon as I planted my tripod down an incoming wave came splashing in. I fired away and was amazed to see the wave action this spot offered. I knew I had my composition set as I waited for the sky to erupt in full colors.
The burn took quite a while for before the higher clouds above lit. I patiently waited for another big wave to reach my spot but each successive wave seemingly got smaller. I began to wonder if I would ever get my needed wave again. Luckily as the highest clouds above caught color, the reinforcing wave came gushing in. To my relief I captured the wave exactly how I wanted with waterfall like water motion coming down from the various shelves.
The sky continued burning for a total of 30-45 minutes and it was one of the sunsets with the widest color gamut I have witnessed. Overall it was a fun outing catching up with friends and firing the shutter away.
