A Night with the Ancients
I finally made it out to the Ancient Bristlecones this past September on a Sierras boot camp with Alan. These ancient trees, some over 4,000 years old, are some of the oldest living organisms and are full of character with their twisted branches and gnarly bark.
Having spent the first night shooting the Milky Way over Mono Lake, Alan and I had planned to shoot the Milky Way over the Bristlecones for the second night. After scouting the groves, we came across “the tree”. This Bristlecone is more isolated along a hillside and is frequently the subject of most photographs. Looking around this tree, I can tell why it is so popular among photographers. It sports gnarled bark, a twisted trunk, and is full of character that dates back thousands of years.
Shortly before sunset, we were surprised at who showed up to join the party. Huffing and puffing, inmate James Wang managed to escape for a day to join in on the action. As night fell, we began gearing up for shooting the night sky. Once it became darkness fell, we turned our focus to the business at hand. The darkness, the tree, and the Milky Way – it all came together.
