Butterfly lighting attempt (188/366)
July 6, 2008
cwd771 - Butterfly Lighting - We tried our hands at Rembrandt Lighting back in Week 46. This week, we'll try "butterfly" lighting (AKA glamour or paramount lighting). In butterfly lighting, the main light is positioned above the camera lens and aimed down at the subject. The name "butterfly" refers to the shape of the shadow under the nose. You may want to soften the shadow under the nose by bouncing the light back up into the face. You can do this with a reflector or any sort of reflector-like thing (white poster board would probably do the trick). Note that this type of lighting is usually only recommend for women, not men (models that is...the sex of the photographer is irrelevant ;-).
I am thrilled to finally participate in an cwd assignment again after such a long break but the butterfly lighting shoot was a really frustrating experience. I tried to set up everything according to the description above but I think I didn't get it right. This is not an outcome I'm satisfied with. And I don't even know what exactly I did wrong. Hopefully I can at least learn something from this.
