YEOMAN 59001 YEOMAN ENDEAVOUR

Foster Yeoman Limited General Motors ‘JT26CW-SS’ Co-Co class 59 diesel-electric locomotive number 59001 YEOMAN ENDEAVOUR of Merehead Traction Maintenance Depot passes Acton Wells Junction signal box at Old Oak Common in west London on the Down Main line with a Purfleet to Merehead Quarry empty stone train (6V62). 16:37, Thursday 31st March 1988

Acton Wells Junction signal box was located by the Down Main line where the lines to Cricklewood and Willesden left the Willesden High Level to Kew line, and was a North London Railway Company type 3a design fitted with a 60 lever London & North Western Railway Company Tumbler frame opened for the North and South West Junction Railway circa 1892 replacing an 1870s built signal box located a short distance to the south. The lever frame was manufactured by the North London Railway Company at their Bow works, the original bar and stud locking being replaced by tappet locking at some time before the lever frame was replaced by a British Railways London Midland Region individual function switch signalling panel commissioned on 18th March 1990 in connection with the upgrading of the South-West Sidings lines to passenger status. The signalling panel was decommissioned on 6th May 2012 and replaced by a GETS MCS workstation commissioned two days later

The signal box carried a London Midland & Scottish Railway Company post-1935 design nameboard and the lighter coloured brickwork on the front indicates the removal of large glass and timber locking room windows. The signal box was fitted with replacement windows in 1990 and was at some time later fitted with uPVC cladding and windows

Note, 59001 was built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (works number 848002-1) at La Grange, Illinois in the United States of America in 1985 for Foster Yeoman Limited as number 59001 and was delivered to Southampton docks on 22nd January 1986. It proposed to be named YEOMAN OF ENGLAND but was instead named YEOMAN ENDEAVOUR at Merehead depot on 28th June 1986
