Roger Bell’s former London Midland & Scottish Railway Company Stanier 7P 4-6-2 ‘Princess Royal’ class locomotive number 6201 PRINCESS ELIZABETH of Edge Hill Motive Power Depot passes Droylsden Station Junction signal box, a British Railways London Midland Region Type 15 design on the Down Main line with the Princess Elizabeth Locomotive Society’s additional Carnforth to Crewe ‘Red Rose’ return charter which it worked between Carnforth and Chester. 16:05, Saturday 27th September 1980

 

Note, 6201 should have worked the train between Carnforth and Chester but due to late running train was diverted from Chester direct to Crewe hauled by British Railways Brush Traction Type 4 Co-Co class 47/3 diesel-electric locomotive number 47356 of Crewe Diesel Traction Maintenance Depot

 

6201 was built at the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company’s Crewe works (works number 107) as number 6201 PRINCESS ELIZABETH in December 1933. It was transferred to British Railways upon nationalisation of the railways on 1st January 1948, being renumbered 46201 in week ending 7th August 1948. It was placed in store at Kingmoor Motive Power Depot in September 1962 and was withdrawn from Upperby Motive Power Depot in week ending 20th December 1962, remaining in store at Kingmoor Motive Power Depot until purchased for preservation by Roger Bell. It was moved from Kingmoor Motive Power Depot into the care of the Princess Elizabeth Locomotive Society at Ashchurch. The Princess Elizabeth Locomotive Society became the Locomotive “6201 Princess Elizabeth” Society Limited (incorporated on 3rd February 1976) and 6201 was allocated the TOPS number 98801
