TheIndigoProject2001pincushion 002

Views of the pincushion and needles used in the project. indigo dyed hemp cloth, machine and hand sewn, hand forged sterling silver needles, handspun 2-ply silk thread.

The pincushion is stuffed with lead fishing weights and fiberfill. It is shaped like a barrel indigo vat, and it's actual heavy weight is symbolic for me of the weight of the 20 gallon vat, in the sense that the vat is not often moved; one must go to it. The place where the vat is, is like roots, or home, which grad school was for three years. Then like a child leaving the nest when it's time, I "moved" this vat with me, in the form of this pincushion, to a new home, where I then made my own 25 gallon vat in 2002, which is my vat today.

The Indigo Project performance piece and installation, final thesis work from grad school, 2001. There is a long statement/description of this work; for those interested, please click on this set.
