Girl Scouts give back to community

By Laine Ritter

YONGSAN GARRISON - From 10 Mar to 17 Mar, Girl Scouts from USAG-Yongsan, USAG-Humphreys, and Osan AB participated in Girl Scouts Week at venues throughout the Peninsula to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the USA Girl Scouts. Moms (and a few dads) were out in force! Girl Scout volunteers and Girl Scouts throughout the Peninsula participated in Sunrise Services, Girl Scouts Flash Mobs, Take Action Projects to help the community and Decades of Girl Scouting Commemorations.

In Yongsan, the week started with Thinking Day and Decades of Girl Scouting Commemoration. Each troop made “S.W.A.P.S.” (Special Watchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere) - small hand-made crafts themed to their Girl Scout Decade or Thinking Day Country to exchange with girls from other troops and the Korean Girl Scouts. This is a long-standing Girl Scout tradition providing a fun way to personalize get togethers of this type. By the end of Thinking Day/Decades Commemoration, these trinkets were being passed around at a phenomenal rate.

Lisa Dahl, a Troop Leader from Yongsan, has been volunteering at Girl Scout Events for 4 years because she wants to be involved in her daughter’s activities, as well as make friends with other Girl Scout parents and leaders. “It was a fabulous event.” Lisa said; “My troop loved the stations, learning what Girl Scouts did in decades past, the enthusiasm...Couldn’t have been better!”

All the Girl Scouts had a great time during Girl Scout Week. Junior Troop 22 concluded the week by mailing 5 cases of cookies to troops in Afghanistan and donating 128 books and 122 Bookmarks to the Yongsan Library.

Mike Pauling, a USAGSO-Seoul Troop Leader, said “I can’t think of a better way to be reminded of the power of volunteerism than by participating in Girl Scout Week activities. Happy 100th Birthday Girl Scouts!”
