Gravestone of Mary F. Andrews

The story of Mary Frances Andrews is particularly touching. She contracted tuberculosis while in Europe. Her father brought her home to Battle Creek where she was treated by Dr. J. H. Kellogg. There was nothing that could be done and she passed away after a brief illness. The Center for Adventist Research has a very touching series of letters from J. N. Andrews recorded by Charles that were written while Mary was a patient at Battle Creek Sanitarium. She expressed a desire to recover and return to Europe and help her father. One day after a particularly difficult coughing spell, her grandmother said “We must believe” to which Mary replied, “I do believe.” Her last words were “pray father.” Elder Andrews brought Mary back here to Rochester, NY for burial. She was tremendously talented and her death was a great blow to Elder Andrews. The current marker was erected in 1986.
