Gravestones of Reuben Bangs, and Elizabeth Bangs

Buried in the North Street Cemetery are Ellen White’s twin sister Elizabeth, nicknamed “Lizzie,” her husband Ruben Bangs, and Eva a baby who died at about six weeks of age.

Ellen White and her twin sister remained emotionally close throughout their lives. As children it seems that Ellen was the more dominant of the two. As they played in Deering Oaks Park near their home in Portland, Maine, Lizzie would sometimes ask for help over fallen trees. She would say to Ellen, “Help over log.” Of course Ellen would help her. She remarked years later to a nurse, Delia Walker-Lovell, “I have been helping people over logs ever since.”
